TATLife® Ethical Guidelines for
Tapas Acupressure Technique® (TAT®)
Introduction
TAT® is a specific energy-based healing modality developed by Tapas Fleming which is part of the broader field of energy medicine/energy psychology. Because of the innovative nature of TAT, TAT Professionals face ethical challenges that not only include, but also go beyond the concerns of more traditional health care providers. In addition, TAT Professionals are comprised of many different types of helping professionals, including both licensed and non-licensed caregivers. Therefore, TATLife is committed to providing TAT Professionals with ethical principles and guidelines as part of its commitment for TAT to gain acceptance as a viable and credible healing modality within the health care field.
All TAT Professionals who are subject to a code of ethics and standards of practice by virtue of their licensure and/or membership in an organization of their fellow professionals will overlay TAT’s ethical principles on top of their own professional codes and standards.
Personal Ethical Guidelines
1. TAT Professionals understand the importance of doing their own personal growth work as it relates to ethical behavior with colleagues and clients and commit to lifelong personal development.
2. TAT Professionals understand their own limitations as caregivers, establishing proper boundaries with clients.
3. TAT Professionals are committed to first do no harm and to use intuition with integrity to avoid manipulating clients or projecting their own issues onto clients.
4. TAT Professionals seek feedback, consultation, and guidance from colleagues, mentors and Consultants to help them deal with ethical issues, blind spots and shadow behavior that could create ethical vulnerabilities in working with clients.
5. TAT Professionals have developed and are able to articulate their own personal code of ethics which is compatible with TATLife’s Ethical Guidelines. TAT Professionals recognize that a fully developed personal code of ethics will guide and assist them in situations where written ethical guidelines do not provide specific instructions in working with clients.
Professional Ethical Guidelines
1. TAT Professionals agree to use TAT only in accordance with the standards of practice set by TATLife as developed by Tapas Fleming.
2. TAT Professionals are clear enough about their limitations both personally and professionally to know when to refer a client to another health care practitioner. TAT Professionals maintain a referral list consisting of high caliber and ethical colleagues in order to comply with this ethical guideline to refer clients when appropriate.
3. TAT Professionals know the limits of their competence and seek consultation for problems and situations that challenge their knowledge and abilities.
4. TAT Professionals remain up-to-date on the latest developments in theory and research concerning TAT. They pursue continuous professional development and continuing education, including periodically on the topic of ethics and the law for practitioners of energy-based therapies.
5. TAT Professionals obtain informed consent from clients and provide clear information to prospective clients. Clients must be informed that TAT is still considered novel and experimental, and that as consumers, they have the right to know about and use mainstream treatments that are also used to treat their presenting issue. Any claims made by TAT Professionals concerning the efficacy of TAT must be backed by research data and a theoretical framework.
6. TAT Professionals always put the needs of their clients first and foremost, treating them with compassion and building a collaborative relationship with those they serve. TAT Professionals do not promise any particular results when working with any client.
7. TAT Professionals maintain confidentiality within the therapeutic relationship with clients and respect each client’s right to privacy. TAT Professionals understand and inform their clients about the legal limits of confidentiality and privilege according to each practitioner’s licensure or non-licensure.
8. TAT Professionals recognize that in dealing with a client’s energy system, they have a higher level of responsibility to be aware of and tend to subtle boundary issues. TAT Professionals do not use their abilities to work with energy to exploit the power differential between themselves and their clients.
9. It is never acceptable for a TAT practitioner to develop a new friendship, business relationship or any kind of romantic/sexual relationship with a client while treatment is occurring. More restrictive injunctions against such dual relationships that are required by a TAT practitioner’s profession supersede the foregoing ethical guideline.
10. TAT Professionals treat all colleagues with dignity, respect and courtesy, talk about colleagues in respectful and appreciative ways and credit colleagues for their contributions and innovations.
