I was just driving home from the local classy deli with some soup and crackers for dinner and started thinking about something that is really not obvious about TAT and our community. Unless you’re in “TATland”, you can’t know it from the outside.

When we do TAT, we don’t try and make anything happen or analyze whatever did or didn’t happen. We don’t judge ourselves about what did or didn’t happen. Our mood is contemplative, receptive and internally quiet. Doing each Step is kind of like getting into a little boat on a warm summer’s day (nice, welcoming trees along the river – we’re out in the country smelling fresh flowers and ripe summer fruits and vegetables growing nearby). We make the intention of the Step and with that, we push off into the gentle current. We drift. In a relaxed frame of mind, we simply notice what happens.

Our certified Professionals take courses on Practicing Presence so that they can deeply relax into this way of facilitating a session. They don’t analyze or offer suggestions about anything that has come up for a person they’re working with. They don’t ask questions to get to the “root” of the issue or try to “help” their client see something differently. They offer their presence and accept whatever their client shares. (This can take some un-learning for our previously highly-educated Pros.)

So, here’s what I realized. Our whole crew of Professionals and Trainers is in the same mood when we’re together. We enjoy each other’s presence — we chat together online, text, talk on the phone, at workshops and over meals whenever we can. What we share is enjoyed and it ends in enjoyment: there’s no analysis or judgment in our communications with each other. It is so nice! People offer their own experience and others acknowledge it – just like in our TAT sessions with ourselves and with clients. It’s rare and precious… and makes for an incredibly lively exchange. We laugh together a lot. I love our community. I hope that you’ve experienced some of these feelings as you’ve done TAT and interacted with our TATLife staff (go team!) and our Professionals and Trainers (yay crew!).

All our workshops, sessions with Pros, teleclasses and materials have this same underlying way of being. I think you’ll like it.

At the Practicing Presence Workshop, you’ll develop your own skills in one of the most important parts of practicing TAT – being present! We’ll talk about what being present really means and what stands in the way of being present; we’ll do TAT as a group to clear many common blocks to being present. Not only will your professional practice benefit from taking this course, but it will also help open the way to being more present in all aspects of your life, especially in enhancing your relationships.

The Practicing Presence workshop helps deepen a way of being with the healing presence, allowing God (or the natural healing energy) to do the healing as we’re in a deep witness state. The workshop gives us many opportunities to grow into more surrendered states of presence. This is an essential component of being an excellent TAT Professional and is required for certification as a TAT Professional.


Here is a story sent by a student in one of TAT Trainer Yves Wauthier workshops. It’s a wonderful example of the kinds of experiences people have when they attend TAT workshops and get to work on their own stuff.


It was during a TAT 2 workshop with Yves. I just wanted to do TAT on addictions and trying to stop smoking for myself.

Step 1: It’s impossible to stop smoking for me!
Step 2: Stopping smoking is easy and cigarettes are poison for my body.

In 20 minutes of TAT with Yves, I have completely finished with cigarettes. No more cravings for one month. I started to smoke 23 years ago.

TAT really works. I was surprised.

Deep Happiness, The Utter Sweetness of Love

Dear Friends,

Thank you for the sweet stories and support you’ve shared with me since over the last couple of weeks. You’ve given me lots of smiles and I’ve felt your caring presence in my life.

“It’s the last night…some of you may want to stay up and contemplate your question” – that’s what the teacher of the enlightenment intensive I was attending stated. I hadn’t had a direct experience yet so I decided to stay up.

[A direct experience can be when something moves from intellectual knowledge to a true experience. It can be a sudden understanding that you didn’t have before. Sometimes it’s like a lens shifting a fraction of an inch, and suddenly everything is in focus and you see what you didn’t see before.]

The gravel road crunched under our feet as a handful of us walked to a tiny cabin up the road from the main building where we’d stay up for the night. The warmth inside was welcome: it was a cold December night in the high desert in California. Sparkly stars and crisp air.

I was working on “Who am I?”, going after my own personal experience, not a thought-out conclusion or new idea. Around 2:30 a.m., I noticed a pain in my back…and noticed myself being conscious of the pain…and recognized that I wasn’t the body and that the experience of pain was within my being, which was not a thing. I recognized that I Am, without reference to time or birth or death. The back pain was like a flash of lightning through my awareness, then it was gone. I was 16.

From that first experience, the knowledge of our birthless and deathless nature, that our nature is love and that we are perfect now has been a constant reality and support in the ups and downs of my life. It helped me when I lost my twins and my mother. It helped me when I had cancer. People often commented to me how brave I was in those situations. Nothing has felt like bravery; my sense of calm comes from knowing my loved ones and I are deathless.

It’s because of these first-hand experiences that I’m offering the three-session teleseminar on Loss and also the Spiritual Retreat in Kauai in May. It’s because I’d like you to have the pleasure of knowing your true nature, feeling at ease in your eternal presence. It really makes life more fun – things going on happen within the context of your timeless self instead of you being dragged through life’s ups and downs. Having gone through the experience of my mom dying highlighted the value of the direct experiences I’ve had of who we are, the purpose of life, and divine love.

TAT naturally helps us de-identify from that which we’re not and restores us to who we are. The reason it “works” to do Step Two (…for example: “ it happened, it’s over and I’m OK”) is because we really are OK. “OK” means that life doesn’t mess us up because we’re the eternal substratum of life – so once we return to that as our center, we feel just fine. Not noticing who we are would be like water thinking it’s a wave and never noticing it’s water. OK…maybe this is sounding kind of “out there”. The bottom line is that when push comes to shove and someone you love is dying or you find out that you or someone you love has a life-threatening disease or you lose a relationship that has meant a lot to you, you can be truly OK. I’m not saying I didn’t cry when my mom died or that I’m a cold-hearted unfeeling person. I have strong feelings, but underneath, I’m always really and truly OK. A very happy OK.

People have asked me to share my “Step Zero” – where I’m coming from before even starting the Steps of TAT. So, if you’d like to walk that path with me, join me in Kauai and/or the teleseminar on Loss.

During the retreat in Kauai, our focus will be on having direct experience of who we are, the purpose of life and other essential questions. We’re going for change in our direct consciousness, not a mental mapping of where we are and where we want to end up in our lives. We’re not creating a life path or a mental construct of who and what we think we are and what we think life is. We’re going for change in our immediate consciousness, which then naturally and spontaneously guides us in our day-to-day life.

It’s beautiful on Kauai and the island itself feels very supportive to our group. Our group is typically open, supportive and full of good cheer. We work a few hours in the morning, take from lunch through dinner to enjoy the island and each other’s company, then work a couple of hours at night. It’s a great schedule. The biggest value is the opportunity to go for your own experience of what’s true for you — who you really are, the purpose of your life. Just for clarification, nothing is taught about what you’re “supposed to” experience or “how it really is”. There also isn’t anything taught about religious beliefs, or what you should or shouldn’t believe about anything. It’s an open field for you to explore without anyone judging your experience – it’s all about your own discoveries. My life wouldn’t be anything like it’s been without these types of direct experiences supporting my everyday life. Some enlightenment experiences are hysterically funny and surprising along with the thought “Oh! It’s always been this way – I just never noticed!”. Some are just like a quiet whisper. The Utter Sweetness of Love

I’m sitting in the TAT Pose,
the intent to experience love is in my heart, my mind, my cells.
My attention goes to my mouth.
I’m inside my mouth.
My tongue and the cavern of my mouth are all there is.

Suddenly, I catch my breath.
There is a sweetness, sweeter than anything my imagination can create.
This sweetness is on my tongue and in my tongue.
This sweetness is all there is.

It’s more than a taste; it’s a vibration that is in every cell of my body.
Tears are rolling down my cheeks at the pure sweetness I’m experiencing.
Nothing I’ve ever felt or tasted can compare to this utter sweetness.

And then, oh God! Then I realize that nothing has been added to my mouth
that wasn’t there before.
This sweetness, this love, this vibration is who I am!
Nothing has been added.

A New Year’s Gift: Turning Whining and Complaining into Emotional Gold; Just a Few Spots Left

A couple of weeks ago, something was bugging me and I just felt like whining and complaining about it. Usually, I try not to whine or complain because I never see any good coming out of it…until that day. It dawned on me that I could whine and complain with all the gusto I wanted, write down my unedited expressions and then (as if you hadn’t guessed) do TAT about the whole bundle. So that’s what I did. Oh man, that was so liberating: I no longer resonated or identified with any of it and felt so free free free. All of that nasty griping turned into emotional and spiritual gold. And that’s my New Year’s gift to you: unlimited piles of inner gold transformed from the worst thoughts and feelings.

Just make a list of all your complaints and download the free How to Do TAT booklet. As you do the TAT Steps, the word “this” in each statement will refer to your whole list. (We call this “making a bundle” or “throwing everything into the pot”.)

Everything that led up to my resonating, identifying and connecting with this happened.

Did you know that the NIH (National Institutes of Health) has given Kaiser Permanente a $2.1 million dollar grant to study 500 people in TAT research for a second time? They want to see if it’s really as effective as it was in the first study for maintaining weight loss. "The Tapas Acupressure Technique did show superiority in helping people maintain weight loss in a pilot study involving 90 participants," said Charles Elder, MD, principal investigator and an internal medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente Northwest.

I attended Tapas’s workshop in Chantilly, VA in April 2007 on The Pleasure of Weight Loss. During the workshop we all chose something to work on. I chose to release my chocolate craving and my avoidance of exercise. I had a medical check up in September and found I had lost 11 pounds.

I was not obese to begin with, but I wanted to lose 10 pounds and become healthier. After doing all steps of TAT for “My chocolate craving”, remembering the 6 layer chocolate fudge cake I had had at lunch, and “I don’t want to exercise”, I came home and hired a personal trainer and joined a gym. I have been exercising for 6 months and loving it. I have lost 11 pounds and dropped to a size 10. It will be interesting to see where my body goes.
