A New Year’s Gift: Turning Whining and Complaining into Emotional Gold; Just a Few Spots Left

Happy New Year!

A couple of weeks ago, something was bugging me and I just felt like whining and complaining about it. Usually, I try not to whine or complain because I never see any good coming out of it…until that day. It dawned on me that I could whine and complain with all the gusto I wanted, write down my unedited expressions and then (as if you hadn’t guessed) do TAT about the whole bundle. So that’s what I did. Oh man, that was so liberating: I no longer resonated or identified with any of it and felt so free free free. All of that nasty griping turned into emotional and spiritual gold. And that’s my New Year’s gift to you: unlimited piles of inner gold transformed from the worst thoughts and feelings.

Just make a list of all your complaints and download the free How to Do TAT booklet. As you do the TAT Steps, the word “this” in each statement will refer to your whole list. (We call this “making a bundle” or “throwing everything into the pot”.)

Everything that led up to my resonating, identifying and connecting with this happened.

For Step Two, use this statement instead:

All that happened, it’s over and I no longer resonate, identify or connect with this.

Did you know that the NIH (National Institutes of Health) has given Kaiser Permanente a $2.1 million dollar grant to study 500 people in TAT research for a second time? They want to see if it’s really as effective as it was in the first study for maintaining weight loss. "The Tapas Acupressure Technique did show superiority in helping people maintain weight loss in a pilot study involving 90 participants," said Charles Elder, MD, principal investigator and an internal medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente Northwest.

I attended Tapas’s workshop in Chantilly, VA in April 2007 on The Pleasure of Weight Loss. During the workshop we all chose something to work on. I chose to release my chocolate craving and my avoidance of exercise. I had a medical check up in September and found I had lost 11 pounds.

I was not obese to begin with, but I wanted to lose 10 pounds and become healthier. After doing all steps of TAT for “My chocolate craving”, remembering the 6 layer chocolate fudge cake I had had at lunch, and “I don’t want to exercise”, I came home and hired a personal trainer and joined a gym. I have been exercising for 6 months and loving it. I have lost 11 pounds and dropped to a size 10. It will be interesting to see where my body goes. Also, I enjoy chocolate on occasion but have no craving or need for it.

(I did the conversation when I was working with cancer and it made an immediate huge change – I felt a 15 foot blast of energy from my body across my kitchen, broke out in a hot sweat, and had a vision of my immune cells eating the cancer cells. For two mornings I have awakened with a headache, pain and discomfort in my neck, shoulders and upper back, and an overall feeling of being pressed into a tiny knot. From No Time to Exercise to Running a 5K

I’m on my way to Orlando and am very excited about seeing everyone at the ACEP conference.

Here is a letter from Julie McMakin, our customer service rep. Julie told me recently about entering her first 5K (a race in which participants run five kilometers). I enjoyed the story so much that I asked her to write it in a letter so that I could share it with you.

In her letter, Julie mentions doing a “group pot”. At workshops, we often do TAT as a group with everyone adding in what they want to do TAT on. We call this creating a TAT pot or bundle. The group then does a TAT session together on everything in the pot. For more information about group TAT, see the articles in our newsletter archives.

I’m so excited! I’m participating in my first 5K run tomorrow and have TAT to thank for where I am today!

About a year ago, I attended a Basics workshop with Sara Arey, certified Trainer and Education Coordinator for TATLife. One of the things I put into the group pot we did was incorporating exercise in my daily life.

Over the course of the next few months, I gradually started walking more. This led into exercising on a more regular basis at a gym. I’m now on my fifth month of exercising on a consistent basis! I’ve trained for a 5K and am working towards a 10K.

These are some of the fears/issues I did TAT on when I first thought about what was holding me back from exercising the way I envisioned:

  • I don’t have enough time.
  • I’ll fail.
  • People will notice me.
  • Something will have to give – I won’t have as much time for the important people in my life and because of this I’ll let someone down.
  • I’ll be worn out and won’t have enough energy for my children.

Releasing these fears helped me feel more confident and have the inner courage to move towards the life I want. Now, whenever I feel hesitant about something or have those “Ah… that seems scary” feelings, I do a TAT session and feel so much lighter and happier! I’m so thrilled to have this brilliant tool!

Looking back over the fears/issues I did TAT on, I realize they are not a part of me anymore. One of my biggest worries - of not having enough time or energy for family and other important people in my life – has not been a problem. My body now requires less sleep and I’ve found I have more energy than before. The time we spend together has become richer and there’s more of a connection than ever. Plus, we’re all having fun being active together!

Bundles & Resonance; Becoming Slimmer & Healthier; TAT for a New Business

Here is an explanation of resonance and bundling that Sara Arey, our Education Coordinator, wrote. I thought you might find helpful.


I was working with someone the other day who was very focused on one particular issue, becoming a nonsmoker. He has not used TAT very much and had some great questions that gave me an opportunity to think about what we are doing with TAT and explain it in a way I hadn’t before.

At the beginning of the session, I suggested that we make a list (or bundle) of all the issues that came to mind for him. He wasn’t interested and just wanted to focus on the single goal. To me, it felt like he was so focused on not smoking, that he was ignoring other things which might be contributing to his need to smoke, like perhaps stress from his job, difficult relationships, disappointment about unrealized expectations, or something else.

I explained that often our goals and dreams are like ships tied to a dock by a number of ropes. The ropes could be a range of different things, but whatever they are, they keep us from moving ahead. If we’re focused on an issue like not smoking and something else comes to mind, too, it’s worth including in the bundle in case it’s related.

With TAT, we don’t need to know how these other issues are connected to the main issue, or even if they are. We just add them to the bundle, work on them all together, and begin untying our ship so that it’s free to sail. Once I explained this, he happily included other issues in the list.

When we got to the first step, I used the phrase “Everything that contributed to my resonating, identifying, and connecting with this happened.” The thought of identifying and connecting with an issue made sense to him, but the term resonance didn’t.

In physics, an example of resonance is what happens when a tuning fork is struck near a guitar. If one of the guitar strings is tuned to the same note as the tuning fork, that string will vibrate and actually play the note. In the same way, if we are tuned to a certain frequency and something in our lives happens on that frequency, we resonate with it and react to it. If we tune ourselves to a different note, then the thing happening in our lives doesn’t resonate with us and we don’t react. I think that not resonating with something makes it much less likely even to show up in our lives.

An example of the effect of resonance would be if we’re tuned to getting frustrated with someone driving too slowly, when we get behind a slow-moving car, we react, getting frustrated and angry. This can lead to poor decisions and inappropriate actions, like passing when it isn’t safe or driving too close to the other car. If we change the note we’re tuned to and we no longer get frustrated and angry in that situation, we’re now free to make a wiser decision. To change our resonance in this example with TAT, we could just decide that “this” will be “getting frustrated and angry with slow drivers” and use the phrase:

Everything that contributed to my resonating, identifying, and connecting with this happened.

Then we can do as many of the rest of the nine steps as we need to do in order not to feel resonant, identified, connected with it.

Dear Tapas,

Like any EFT newbie, I was told about TAT a few years ago but back then, although It sounded very interesting to me, I found that it was too long and that I could never remember the whole process (I could have probably worked on that belief…) so I never gave it a real try until…you spoke about the 3 steps method. I thought to myself, it’s about time to give a try and to see if it’s as powerful as people say.

Recently I found a good reason to test it. I’m starting an EFT practice and I’m rather anxious about how to attract clients, advertise and so on as you can imagine. By the way, it’s unbelievable the number of aspects one can work on when one decide to start a business!

A few days ago, a client you had scheduled an appointment canceled and I was angry because I was short of money this month and I had to pay my therapist anyway.

The evening before this canceled appointment, I wrote down 6-7 statements about my anxiety, my fear of repelling clients, my fear of financial independence. I did the 3 steps on each one (maybe I could have tried a bundle, I don’t know). The very next morning, I got a call from a new client who wanted an EFT session with me.

I’m glad I followed my gut to try because it works great!
